Doll’s House of Petronella Oortman, Jacob Appel (I), c. 1710

Doll’s House of Petronella Oortman, Jacob Appel (I), c. 1710

parchment (animal material), h 87cm × w 69cm More details

This doll’s house was so expensive that a painting was made of it. In assembling a doll’s house, wealthy ladies showed the ideal version of a Dutch household. This included a Black servant, seen in the left room on the middle floor. All of the original dolls have been lost, except for a baby in a cradle.
