January, with the Sign of Aquarius, Jan Kamphuijsen, 1791
Josephus Augustinus Brentano had the picture gallery in his house on Amsterdam’s Herengracht painted in a classicizing style. Depicted on the ceiling were heroic scenes from the life of Hercules, framed by grotesques and arabesques, ornaments in the form of imaginary plants, and animals derived from Roman antiquity. Adorning the walls were twelve pilasters decorated in the same style and representing the Months of the Year.
