Jupiter Disguised as Diana Seducing the Nymph Callisto, Jacob de Wit, 1727

oil on canvas, h 240cm × w 205cm More details

The nymph Callisto does not realise that she is actually being seduced by the Roman god Jupiter, who has disguised himself as Diana (with the crescent moon on her head). Tales of seduction – both with and without consent – were popular themes in the 18th century. Unembarrassed, Callisto yields to what she believes is lesbian love.
