The Bridge Over the IJssel River at Doesburg, Willem Roelofs (I), 1889
During the summer months, Roelofs would venture out and paint a multitude of studies outdoors. With his smooth and deft brushstrokes, he was able to capture this river landscape with the quintessential Dutch cloud cover. He would frame the studies, hang them on the wall of his studio and number them. This particular painting is number 3, as seen at the lower right. In the winter months, Roelofs would use these studies to compose large landscapes.
