In 1888, Anne Marie Louise married Andries Bonger, a friend of Theo van Gogh (Vincent’s brother) and of the French painters Emile Bernard and Redon. Andries collected the work of these avant-garde artists, including self-portraits of Van Gogh and Bernard, on view elsewhere in this gallery. Using just two shades of paint, Redon succeeded in infusing this portrait with an air of delicate frailty.
