River Valley, Hercules Segers, c. 1626 - c. 1630
oil on panel, h 30cm × w 53.5cm Catalogue entry
Segers incorporated elements from the Flemish landscape tradition, such as the high vantage point, rocky mountains, and thin painting technique with thicker accents. The way in which Segers rendered depth with colour and contrasts of light and dark is reminiscent of Pieter Bruegel and his followers.
