View of Notre Dame de Lorette and Rue Fléchier in Paris, Antoine Vollon, c. 1860 - c. 1900
In the 19th century, the city of Paris underwent a radical transformation. A completely new district was created, Nouvelle Athènes, which quickly became popular with artists. Although Vollon lived nearby, he immortalized this view from another apartment. In quick strokes, he painted the church and Rue Fléchier, the street still wet from a passing rain shower.
