The Marsh, Anton Mauve, c. 1885 - c. 1888
The dark grey sky is reflected in this vast and desolate swamp landscape, with sunlight occasionally breaking through the clouds. In the far distance, a church steeple can just be seen rising above the horizon while black birds are the only sign of life. Mauve was constantly looking for unspoilt nature to inspire him. He was wellknown for the silvery grey tone of his landscapes.
