Still Life with Fish, Sea Food and Flowers, Clara Peeters, c. 1612 - c. 1615
The gleaming carp, the slippery eel, and the shiny glaze of the earthenware bowl: they seem almost tangible. With her still lifes, Peeters seamlessly tapped into the era’s fascination with plants, flowers, and ‘art cabinets’ in which wealthy collectors gathered special objects. In this instance, she combines fish, shells, and oysters from all over the world.
