Like so many artists, Sweerts undertook a study trip to Rome. There he painted this scene of a painter’s studio, in which all the phases of artistic training are to be seen. At the left a young artist studies a large anatomical figure; piled up at the right are fragments of antique statues. In the left background a painter sketches from a nude model; a completed painting hangs on the wall.
