Landscape in Brazil, Frans Jansz Post, c. 1665 - c. 1669
After a stay in Brazil, Frans Post returned to his native Haarlem. He would spend the rest of his life there producing paintings based on sketches of the landscape and animals he had made in South America. In most of his work the animals appear to live together in harmony, but not in this canvas: a boa constrictor in the left foreground is devouring a six-banded armadillo.
