The Cascades at Tivoli, with a Storm Approaching, Abraham Teerlink, 1824
The cascades (cascatelle in Italian) at Tivoli were already a tourist attraction in Teerlink’s time. The artist incorporated this contemporary activity in a view of the famous waterfalls. Beneath a menacing, stormy sky, a company of travellers ascends the hill opposite the falls. The man on the white horse is a painter, whose portfolio of sketches is carried by the guide at the front of the group.
