Lemon (Citrus limon), Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt, 1596 - 1610
The lemon tree is native to Southeast Asia and was brought to Europe by traders. It was planted in the Royal Gardens in Prague at the beginning of the 16th century, marking the onset of a veritable lemon craze at the imperial court. Orangeries were built to protect the precious plant and fruit from the harsh European winter.
