Dikke reet (Fat Butt) (diptych, part 1), Kinke Kooi, 1991
Fat buttocks and fleshy folds may well be typical features of Rubens’ beauty queens, but most women today by far favour the ideal of thinness. Despite the counter-movement introduced by Kim Kardashian, having a ‘fat ass’ is still not considered a compliment. Kooi sees this differently. She presents the female derrière together with a plump, stuffed sausage surrounded by rotund curves like jewels in satin-lined boxes.
