Naked Tree, Kinke Kooi, 1991
Kooi’s Naked Tree is the earliest work in the group of drawings that the Rijksprentenkabinet recently acquired from the artist. Her preference for depicting human shapes in non-human beings is immediately apparent. A stomach, buttocks, and breasts can be discerned in the gnarled tree trunk. This fascination continues to inform her drawings, although it seems to have gradually shifted toward the internal human body.
