Hendrick Goltzius is considered one of the most important Dutch draughtsmen of the 16th and 17th centuries. Rarely can a drawing be added to his oeuvre. This delicate silverpoint portrait of a young man was unknown until it was acquired by Oudemans. The sitter’s motto: J’attendray (I will wait) is a variant of that of William of Orange: Je maintiendrai (I will maintain).
