Saint Jerome Reading, Jan Nagel (1570-1616), 1595
Like the adjacent work by Hans Mont, drawings by Jan Nagel are extremely rare. Similar to his contemporary, Nagel seems to have been inspired by Italian woodcuts. In this depiction of Saint Jerome, Nagel achieved the effects of light and dark through broad strokes of green-brown wash and by making clever use of the white of the paper. The lion sits beside the Church Father, his steadfast, faithful, four-legged companion.
