pen and brown ink, over red chalk, on light brown cartridge paper; framing line in brown ink, h 202mm × w 323mm Catalogue entry

Jacques de Gheyn probably made the underlying drawing in red chalk from life. This material was perfect for making rapid sketches. He later worked up the depiction in pen and brown ink. The typically short curved crosshatching betrays the hand of an experienced engraver. The artist worked the copper plate with a burin in the same way.
