Study Sheet of Sunflowers, Snowberry, and Blackthorn, Theo Nieuwenhuis, c. 1895
Nieuwenhuis’ studies formed the ‘archive’ that he mined when drawing his illustrations on a litho stone. He worked selectively. Of the motifs in this drawing he ultimately used only the branch of blackthorn and one of the branches of snowberry (in two different lithographs). On this sheet he also noted the characteristics of small parts, such as blooms and seeds.
