Street Scene in Beverwijk, Jacob Cats (1741-1799), 1793
This elaborate drawing is proof that Jacob Cats could work with extraordinary accuracy. Virtually every brick and cobblestone in this street scene is individually drawn. Beverwijk lies north of Haarlem. The tall steeple of the church there was visible far out at sea in the 18th century. Nowadays little is left of the streetscape, only the church and the stepped gable between the tower and tree are still standing.
