Visit to the Zoo, Pieter Bartholomeusz. Barbiers, c. 1800 - c. 1837
In the 19th century, zoos and menageries were often accessible only to artists and the well-to-do. Elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen with top hats went there to parade; the animals were simply part of the background scenery. However, in this drawing the roles are reversed. One of the monkeys has gotten hold of a hat, startling a group of distinguished visitors.
