Het beeld werd gemaakt door Guillaume I Coustou in 1739-45, in opdracht van Louis XIV en was oorspronkelijk (met pendanten) bedoeld voor Château de Marly. In 1749 werd het beeld verplaatst naar de voet van de Champs-Elysées.
