Four men are deep in conversation with one another. Rembrandt recorded them quickly and deftly, possibly drawing them on the street in a sketchbook. He could also have committed them to his prodigious visual memory, and depicted them back in his workshop. Rembrandt collected these kinds of scenes as inspiration for his often-crowded historical compositions.
