In the late 16th century, artists became increasingly interested in natural history. Jacob de Gheyn counted several botanists and biologists among his friends. His knowledge and observational skills enabled him to draw plants and animals meticulously. He drew this tropical blowfish, a kind of puffer fish, from two sides, adding details about the colours below.
