The Month of April, Joos de Momper (II), c. 1590 - c. 1610
This is a design for an engraving (adjacent), part of a series of twelve illustrations of the months. The drawing affords a good idea of a formal garden around 1600. Rectangular flowerbeds, with flowering plants only in the corners, can be seen behind the large figure of a man holding a potted plant. In the left foreground a woman plants some flowering shrubs in a raised bed.
