Watteau is also known for his ornamental designs, which often feature delicate floral vines interspersed with animals and figures. This composition was created specifically to adorn the exterior surface of a harpsichord lid. In an oval at the right we see a man serenading a woman with a violin. An alternative design can be found in the free-floating oval at the upper left.
