color lithography, h 505mm × w 630mm More details

On 10 September 1865, the Dutch merchant ship Joan Melchior Kemper foundered at the mouth of Nagasaki Bay. In the foreground of this print is the sole survivor: Wietze Hoogenterp. He convalesced in the home of Albert Bauduin. This lithograph is an artist’s imagined rendering of the disaster. As it could not be photographed, this was the next best thing.
