The Adoration of the Shepherds, Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1654
A few years earlier, Rembrandt depicted the nocturnal setting of the same event very differently: in an open manner, with boldly etched lines and mostly parallel shading. Bathed in the light of an oil lamp, the Virgin proudly pulls back her cloak to show the newborn Jesus to the group of shepherds. They look on with tenderness.
