This series illustrates both the local scenery and the aristocratic fashions of Germany 1, France 2, Rome 3, Milan 4, the Netherlands 5 and Spain 6. Sometimes it is possible to spot famous monuments in the distance, such as Trajan’s Column in Rome. The inscriptions rarely refer to clothing, but plate 2 notes that the French constantly update their outfits – an oft-repeated stereotype of the period.
