D’Arminiaensche drekwaghen (Arminian Dung Cart), anonymous, 1618
This satirical print features a wagon full of ‘Arminians’, as the Remonstrants were often called after their leader Jacob Arminius, who died in 1609. His successor Johannes Wtenbogaert sits on the box. He must lead the way and guide the horses, but they disobey him and bolt in different directions. In the cart are prominent Remonstrants and other libertarians, all of whom are ridiculed here.
