Joseph Telling his Dreams, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1638

Joseph Telling his Dreams, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1638

etching, h 111mm × w 84mm More details

Rembrandt here translates Joseph’s story, which he had prepared in his earlier oil sketch (left), into a much smaller etching. Once again, all ten brothers are present, albeit only the fingers of the last one can be seen on the table. Rembrandt did group them differently, though, and only the aged Jacob in the left foreground corresponds fairly precisely with the earlier design.
