Girl with a Basket, Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1642
This girl carrying a reed shopping basket looks as though Rembrandt just ran into her at the market. However, this is virtually impossible. Her 16th-century German clothing is very old-fashioned, and the chin cloth around her jaw had not been worn in the Netherlands for centuries. For this depiction, Rembrandt probably relied on 16th-century series of costume prints.
