Abraham Caressing Isaac, Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1637

etching, h 116mm × w 89mm More details

This is above all a charming depiction of a father caressing his child. The aged Abraham ruffles the hair and cups the chin of his spirited little boy Isaac, who hangs over his knee. Abraham looks straight out at us, while Isaac’s attention is drawn to something beyond the picture plane, lending extra interest to the scene.
