Johannes Wtenbogaert, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1635
Rembrandt here portrays Johannes Wtenbogaert as a scholar, studying and surrounded by books. This renowned preacher had by then already led a tumultuous life. He was forced to flee the country owing to his theological views and was able to return only years later. The cramped and amateurish etched inscription (by his kindred spirit Hugo de Groot) refers to these hardships.
