Through practice, a soldier ensured that the sequential steps of handling a weapon, from loading to firing, became automatic. This increased discipline and firepower; and that firepower determined the success of the Dutch Republic’s army. A series of engravings served as examples. Each step was accompanied by an order, shouted by the captain to his soldiers: ‘U lont opdruckt,’ or ignite the powder charge with a burning fuse.
