The drunkards in the foreground will wind up in hell: ‘while Drunkenness at first charms, it ends in soot and bitterness.’ So begins the accompanying warning by the Englishwoman Elisabeth Jocelin in the parenting book she wrote for her unborn daughter. It was published in 1624, two years after her death in childbirth. Jan Luyken made 17 illustrations for the book’s Dutch translation.
