Pontius’ engraving reproduces a more than fourmetre-high altarpiece in Sint-Martinuskerk in Aalst (Belgium). Engravings offered a solution for those unable to travel to Aalst. That such prints were intended not only for collectors, but could actually play a substantial role in the daily life of believers, emerges from the caption: ‘Saint Roch, pray for us.’

Description

De Heilige Rochus knielt op een stenen trap voor Christus. De verrezen Christus wijst naar een engel die een tablet in de handen draagt waarop staat dat de heilige patroon zal worden van de pestlijders. Onderaan de trap liggen pestlijders die de H. Rochus met smekende gebaren vragen om zijn voorspraak.
