Christ Appointing St Roch as the Patron of Plague Sufferers, Paulus Pontius, after Peter Paul Rubens, 1626
Pontius’ engraving reproduces a more than fourmetre-high altarpiece in Sint-Martinuskerk in Aalst (Belgium). Engravings offered a solution for those unable to travel to Aalst. That such prints were intended not only for collectors, but could actually play a substantial role in the daily life of believers, emerges from the caption: ‘Saint Roch, pray for us.’
