Woman Sitting Half Dressed beside a Stove, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1658
Of all of Rembrandt’s etched female nudes, this is the only one of a woman stripped to the waist. Her body is lightly etched, creating a strong contrast with her skirt and the background. Without clothes, she would soon have got cold, and so there is good reason for the stove next to her. Moreover, it lends the depiction an intimate atmosphere.
