Old Man Lost in Meditation, Leaning on a Book, Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1645
Because of the way in which Rembrandt depicted his models, his tronies of men often have a tranquil disposition. They are idle. Here he placed one of the old men in a more narrative context. Standing behind a table, the man leans on a book, lost in thought. Before him can just be seen a part of a globe. Perhaps he is a scholar or a philosopher.
