Virgin and Child with an Angel and a Boy, Lucas van Leyden, 1523
Lucas’ empathy and eye for detail are manifest in this print, which was inspired by Albrecht Dürer. The child with his chubby cheeks, rendered in foreshortened perspective and cradled in Mary’s lap, is clearly derived from Dürer. The child strongly resembles the Christ Child in the painting on the separate wall. The folds of the clothing correspond in both works.
