The Raising of Lazarus, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1642
Ten years later, Rembrandt returns to the subject of Lazarus raised from the dead, this time depicting the event with more human proportions. Christ stands among the people who have accompanied him to the grave and brings Lazarus back to life almost unobtrusively. The onlookers are both fascinated and surprised, though not entirely astonished by Lazarus, who does indeed rise up.
