An Elegant Oboist, Jacob Smith, 1731
etching, More details
From the early 18th century the oboe had two functions: as a solo instrument and a permanent member of the orchestra. The best players were scouted like today’s top athletes, and were often paid more than other orchestra members. Because of the difficulties in producing an acceptable (let alone pleasing) tone, the oboe never became particularly popular among amateurs. Players such as this well-dressed man, were highly regarded.
