The Lonely House on Adachi Moor, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 1890
Many Kabuki perfomances are based on old folktales. These can be historical of fictitious events, or a combination of the two. The latter could be the case with the horror play of The Lonely House on Adachi Moor. Leading man Onoe Kikugoro V is depicted here in his role as a murderous old witch, who killed unsuspecting travellers.
