Four Scenes of Village Life, Charles Melchior Descourtis, after Nicolas Antoine Taunay, c. 1788 - c. 1790
While the aquatint etchings on the right are printed in a single colour, the technique used for these four prints employs an entire range of colours. The etcher Descourtis made five plates for each print: one for each colour of ink. By printing the plates in black, yellow, blue, red and carmine on top of each other, he integrated each image into a brilliant entity.
