Casanova and the Duke of Matalone Looking at Erotic Art with Leonilde, Adolf Gnauth, after Julius Nisle, c. 1850
This print is an illustration for a German edition of the memoirs of the infamous seducer Casanova. In Naples, he studied erotic art with the Duke of Matalone and the latter’s mistress Leonilde. Casanova fell in love with her, unaware that she was his daughter. The incestuous twist was reason for delaying the publication and providing it with commentary.
