The Wolf and the Goat, anonymous, c. 1530 - c. 1560
In 1923, F.G. Waller donated to the Rijksmuseum his more than 7500 popular prints, also known as catch penny prints: cheap woodcuts for a broad public. Many of these woodcuts were lost and are now very rare. This unique print from Antwerp is one of the earliest examples and therefore an important addition to the Waller collection. An emblematic variant of ‘a wolf in sheep’s clothing’ is depicted: the wolf is a doctor here and his victim is an unsuspecting goat.
