Miffy in the Forest, Dick Bruna, 1982 - 2007
The white cut-aways in this composition stand out more than the tree trunks (the main shapes). This is because they echo Miffy’s form, and because of the optical property of white, an achromatic colour that appears to advance. The eye continually shifts between the foreground and background. Matisse had made Bruna aware of this way of lookin.
