Claude Mellan worked in Rome between 1624 and 1637. His teacher there, Simon Vouet, encouraged him to concentrate on portraiture. And he did. A meeting with fellow artist Maddalena Corvina in 1636 resulted in a small, intimate drawn portrait (now in Frankfurt), which Mellan then subtly translated into a print.
