Between 1956 and 1974 Constant worked on a metropolis of the future: New Babylon. This imaginary utopia consisted of ‘sectors’ that were built over existing cities. By connecting them, a worldwide network would gradually come into being. New Babylon was inhabited by homo ludens, man the player, who would be freed from labour through mechanized production. Creativity was thus given free rein.
