This etching is one of the most refined landscape prints of the 16th century, and is therefore attributed to Lambert Suavius. This printmaker from Liège is known for his virtuoso engravings (an example is displayed on the wall at the right). The similarities, for example in the meticulous rendering of the architecture and clouds, make it plausible that this print was also made by him.

Description

Fantasielandschap met linksonder drie gewapende mannen en een vrouw met hoofddoek en wandelstok op een bruggetje. Centraal op het middenplan bevindt zich een monumentale ruïne: een rondbouw van drie etages en corinthische kapitelen. Rechts is een groep van vijf bomen met opvallende bladertooi. Uiterst rechts staat een andere antieke ruïne, overwoekerd door vegetatie. Rechts onder stroomt een riviertje met waterplanten aan de oevers. De achtergrond wordt gedomineerd door een uitgestrekt landschap met links een grote stad met fantasiearchitectuur; waaronder koepels en flamboyant gotische spitsen. Daarboven strekt zich een bewolkte hemel uit.
